I am running to continue to lead and guide the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office for a second term.
The culture I have fostered and created during my first term leading the Sheriff’s Office is embodied in our core values of Pride, Professionalism and Service. I have always made the safety of our community, staff and those in our custody and care – my Number One Priority. Some examples of my priorities include:
-
Safety for the Community by deploying Deputies to interrupt the fentanyl trade with SFPD and other agencies through Operation Safe Streets while supporting treatment for those suffering from addiction including harm reduction, jail-based treatment and abstinence-based residential treatment.
-
Safety for both the justice involved and our staff in the jails. This will be accomplished through needed technology improvements, renovations to existing facilities and most importantly, an increase in hiring staff and Deputies to relieve the current manpower shortage that our Sheriff’s Office is experiencing.
-
Safety for those in our custody and care by continuing to work with city leaders to establish a facility, separate from jails, where individuals in the criminal justice system who are experiencing mental health or substance abuse crises can receive mandatory, court-ordered detox, withdrawal management, and treatment services. This will help ensure the safety and well-being of those in our custody who are struggling with mental and behavioral health challenges.
In the past five years, we have made significant progress in many areas, including increasing the budget for recruitment and overtime costs. However, the work is not yet finished.
I humbly ask for your vote on November 5th to continue this important work. Thank you.
Some of Sheriff Paul Miyamoto's recent accomplishments
- Deployed the Emergency Services Unit (ESU) and the Warrant Services Unit (WSU) to assist other law enforcement agencies with Operation Safe Streets to disrupt the drug trade in the Tenderloin. From June to December 2023, the Sheriff's Office seized 1.2 kilos of narcotics, and made over 100 arrests and issued 113 citations.
- Formed the Community Engagement Team (CET) for building up trust between the Sheriff's Office and the many communities that make up The City. Since its creation in August 2023, the CET has participated in 19 major community events, with more to come this year.
- As the Sheriff of one of the most diverse law enforcement agencies in the United States, Sheriff Miyamoto has made recruitment and retention a top priority over the past four years, balancing the need to replenish the ranks of Deputies versus maintaining the highest standards for those recruits that are accepted into the Sheriff's Office. For the first time since the pandemic, hiring new recruits outpaced separations from the Sheriff's Office. The rebuilding of the Sheriff's Office rank and file is an ongoing process and remains a top priority both for public safety and the safety of those who serve.
